MORGAN WINS LARGE CONTRACT TO BUILD INDIAN MILL
Leads Consortium for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Project
Worcester, Mass., USA, 2 October 2007

To meet increased demand for steel in the local market, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has awarded Morgan Construction Company a multi-million dollar contract to build a complete two-strand wire rod mill in Visakhapatnan, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The government-owned mill will produce 600,000 metric tonnes of special quality wire rod, ranging from 5.5mm to 20mm in diameter, for the automobile, fasteners and wire drawing industries, among others.

To design and build the mill on a greenfield site, Morgan is leading a consortium of partners which include Morgan India, Stein Heurtey India, and MECON Ltd., a government of India enterprise. Hot commissioning of the mill will be in 27 months. Much of the new mill’s high-speed equipment will be sourced from Morgan’s Worcester facility.

“This mill will complement a four-strand Morgan rod mill built for VSP in the mid-1980s,” says Mark Shore, Vice President, Rolling Mill Sales & Proposals. “It stands as a large component of VSP’s 6.3 million ton expansion project.”  Growth in Indian steel production is projected from nearly 50 million tons per year today to 120 million tons by 2015, with further annual estimates growing to 200 million tons by 2020.

Morgan Construction Company is a designer and producer of high-quality rolling mill products and services for the metal industry worldwide.
