Chicago Heights Orders Mill & Cooling Beds Upgrade
WORCESTER, Mass., March 9, 2004
Morgan Construction Company has received a major
contract from Chicago Heights Steel, of Chicago Heights, IL, for
the modernization of its bar mill. This is the second contract that
Morgan has received within the past three months for upgrading American
bar mills.
Pradip Ghosh, Bar Mill Sales Manager, in announcing
the contract, said, "We are providing Morgan’s state-of-the-art
housingless 2-high mill stands as continuous finishing mill trains
in two rolling lines. These stands replace the old 3-high stands
of the three rolling lines that are in a cross-country arrangement
and are labor intensive. The modernization plan includes mill upgrade
of the flange and the head rolling lines and cooling bed upgrades
for the two lines to receive rolled products on to the beds at higher
speeds. The scope will include the design, manufacture and supply
of equipment and site supervision services for erection and commissioning.
"When complete, Morgan will provide Chicago
Heights with 10 on-line and 10 off-line mill stands with quick-change
transfer cars. In addition, we will supply mill guides, a down-ender,
a roll change robot and two crop shears. For the two cooling beds,
Morgan will replace the existing sweep arms with brake slides and
individually driven rollers and will provide a new dividing shear
for the flange line cooling bed as well as extend the head line
cooling bed enabling charging & handling of longer rail lengths
from the reheating furnace.
"Morgan Process Control" he added,
"will also upgrade the existing mill electrics. When completed,
the upgrade will enable the mill to reduce manpower, reduce downtime,
improve the product quality and maintain its output, while reducing
the number of rolling lines from three to two.
Founded in 1893, Chicago Heights is just one
of the four U.S. mills that produces special shapes such as fence
posts, tee-posts, flare channels and angles for the agriculture
industry. The bar mill produces these products by slitting of scrap
rails used as feed material.
Morgan Construction Company is a designer and producer
of high-quality rolling mill products and services for the metal
industry worldwide.
