Morgan Commissions Upgraded Brazilian
Mill
WORCESTER, Mass., May 1, 2002
Morgan Construction Company has successfully commissioned
the upgraded single-strand rod mill at Gerdau Riograndense, in Sapucaia
do Sul, RS, Brazil. This mill was originally built in 1980.
Morgan do Brasil, a Morgan subsidiary headquarters
in Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil, recently manufactured and installed a
number of pieces of equipment, including two water boxes, equalization
troughs and a pinch roll.
In addition, the upgrade included a Morgan enhanced temperature
control system (METCS).
Designed and supplied by Morgan USA, the METCS is designed for precise
rod temperature regulation.
Fernando AD Guerra, President of Morgan do Brasil,
who announced the successful commissioning, said, "The new
equipment has been designed to work with the mill at its current
speed, as well as in the future when the mill is expanded to produce
a greater product range of 5.5 to 16mm diameter rod at higher speeds
of up to 100m/s".
Currently the Riograndense mill produces carbon steel rod in size
ranges of 5.5 to 14mm diameter at speeds of up to 75m/s.
Annual production is currently 250,000 metric tonnes.
With this latest upgrade, the quality and yield from the mill will
be greatly enhanced, he said, adding, "This is an important
step toward the longer-term goal of increasing production to 500,000
metric tonnes per year".
Morgan Construction Company, is a designer and
producer of high-quality rolling mill products and services for
