Morgan Commissions Hangzhou Rod Mill
WORCESTER, Mass., July 24, 2001
Morgan Construction Company has successfully commissioned
its high-speed rod mill at Hangzhou Iron & Steel Group Co.,
Hangzhou, People's Republic of China.
Daniel M. Morgan, senior vice president and general
manager of the Rolling Mill Division, explained that the new mill
is designed to produce low and high carbon steels, and alloy steels
such as spring and bearing steels.
Morgan Project Manager Fan Li, who was part of
the commissioning team, said, "The commissioning of the Morgan
Equipment went with out a flaw. The mill was able to produce salable
coils consistently with and after its fourth commissioning billet.
He said, "By the third week of hot commissioning,
the mill was running 6.5 mm diameter product at 115 meters per second.
Further," he added, "the customer described the tolerance
as 'extraordinary' noting the rod's ovality to be 0.06 mm to 0.07
mm." This means Morgan's 'exclusive' Reducing/Sizing Mill (RSM)
is finishing rod at better than its guarantee of 0.10 mm ovality
for Hangzhou's new mill.
"The rolling speed of the mill," said
Morgan, "has a finishing speed of up to 120 m/s." He added,
"With a product capacity of more than 350,000 tonnes a year,
the mill is designed to produce 5.5 mm to 20.0 mm rod with a tolerance
of +/-0.10 mm for use as tire cord and for a wide range of product
applications in international markets. The patented Morgan Ring
Distributor will give the mill the capability to produce coils weighing
2,300 kg," he said.
Fan Li added, "The sooner-than-expected startup
of the mill indicates that the customer will be able to achieve
a higher production of quality steel much sooner than they expected."
Morgan equipment designed and built for Hangzhou's
new mill included a four-stand Morgan Reducing/Sizing Mill (RSM),
an eight-stand No-Twist® Mill (NTM), two 2-stand pre-finishing
mini blocks, water boxes, a high-speed laying head, a ten-zone Stelmor®
Controlled Cooling System, and a Morgan Ring Distributor System."
