
Morgan to Upgrade Korean Rod Mill
WORCESTER, Mass., October 6, 2000
Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO), of Pohang,
Korea, has purchased a major upgrade for its #3 mill from Morgan
Construction Company.
Colin Roy, Vice President, Sales, Rolling Mill,
announced that this contract is for an upgrade of a two-strand Morgan
mill that commenced operation in 1988. It is the largest of the
company's three mills.
The contract includes the following new equipment
that will be added to each of the two strands: Stand # 5 shear,
Morgan Reducing/Sizing Mill (RSM), plus off-line quick-change RSM,
pinch roll, laying head, waterboxes, and ring distributor.
Roy noted that the new mill will provide POSCO
with the ability to produce rod at temperatures as low as 750 degrees
C, and at speeds of up to 110 meters per second. "The end result
will be leading edge quality product. When completed, the company's
output for the two strands will increase from 700,000 tonnes per
year to 820,000 tonnes."
He said that Morgan will design the control of
the facility. "In addition," he noted, "Morgan will
also provide the following equipment: Morgan Enhanced Temperature
Control System (M.E.T.C.S.); Morgan Bearing Temperature Monitor
(MBTM); and Morgan Vibration Monitoring System (MVMS).
The new mill is scheduled to be installed and commissioned
by November 2001.
