Morgan Completes Second Phase of Ivaco's Upgrade Project
WORCESTER, Mass., November 30, 1999

Morgan Construction Company is in the process of completing Phase II of the installation of an upgraded rod mill at Ivaco Rolling Mills in L'Orignal, Ontario, Canada.

The second phase of a three-part contract, announced early last year, includes the installation of a four-stand breakdown mill, a larger billet, and a water box control system. The final phase, which is to be installed in January 2000, includes four-stand Morgan Reducing/Sizing Mills, additional water boxes, and an expanded temperature monitoring system.

The first phase, which was completed in late 1997, included the engineering and supply of six new two-stand Vee pre-finishing mini-blocks that replaced Ivaco's existing equipment. Also installed were laying head modifications for tail-end control, a retarded Stelmor® controlled cooling system with Optiflex®, and coil reform equipment. In addition, the mill's pinch rolls and laying heads have been relocated.

With the second phase of the upgrade completed, Ivaco has increased production by 100,000 metric tons a year, from 750,000 to 850,000 metric tons, and coil weight from 1.5 tons to 2.7 tons. In addition, Ivaco will maintain the capability to produce 1.5 ton coils for the near future.

When the third and final phase is completed, Ivaco will have the ability to produce rod from 5.0 mm to 23 mm in diameter with a tolerance of ±0.1 mm (±0.004") at finishing speeds reaching 120 m/s (23,600 ft/min), as compared with 85 m/s (16,700 ft/min) previously.

According to John Foley, General Manager, Domestic Sales, for Morgan, "Not only will Ivaco's mill utilization, speed and output significantly increase, but the new mill will also achieve increased product tolerance and improved product metallurgical properties." Ivaco, which produces rod for cold heading, fasteners, welding, wire rope, and other high quality applications, has been working with Morgan since 1973 when the latter designed its original No-Twist® rod producing equipment.

Morgan Construction Company, is a designer and producer of high-quality rolling mill products and services for the metal industry worldwide.
