Global Steel Increases Output by 18% with
New Morgan Equipment
WORCESTER, Mass. August 14, 1997
As a result of the recent major upgrade to its
two-strand mill, Global Steel Wire, S.A., formerly Nueva Montana
Quijano, of Santander, Spain, will be able to produce 650,000 tons
of rod per year.
According to Michael Shore, senior vice president,
Engineering and Rolling Mill Technology for Morgan, "The annual
production is 100,000 tons more or 18 percent higher than its previous
output prior to the upgrade, and more than four times the mill's
original annual output of 150,000 tons when it was first installed
in 1960."
All of the upgrades were carried out by the mill's
designer and manufacturer, Morgan Construction Company, of Worcester,
Mass., USA. The new equipment included three shears, seven No-Housing
stands, two newly designed Ultra Heavy Duty 285 pre-finishin g Vee
type Mini-Blocks, the latest tail end controls on its laying heads,
an extension of its Stelmor conveyors, and a completely new
reform station with Morgan's exclusive ring distributors. In addition,
Morgan designed a new pallet and stem transferring system which
easily conveys the increased coil weight of 2.5 metric tons onto
a new hook carrying system.
Shore, who has personally handled Morgan's upgrades
to Global's mill since conception in 1960, described the most recent
startup as "one of the best for any rod mill in the world."
He said the mill produced 38,000 metric tons at the end of its first
month following its restart. "Since then, the mill has seen
its average monthly output increase to 61,500 tons in spite of a
limited furnace capacity of 100 metric tons per hour," he noted.
Regarding the mill's speed, the design speed was
25 meters per second in 1960. "Following the recent upgrade,
the mill is running at 85 meters per second, and has a futuristic
speed of 115 meters per second. In addition, its mill yield is more
than 96 percent of capacity," he said
Morgan Construction Company, is a designer and
