Morgan to Upgrade Existing Strand and
Add Second Strand to Rod Mill at P.T. Krakatau, Indonesia
WORCESTER, Mass., February 9, 1996
Morgan Construction Company, worldwide supplier
of shape rolling technology, has received two new contracts from
P.T. Krakatau in Cilegon, Indonesia, one to make modifications to
the existing single strand rod mill and the other to add a second
strand. The initial modification is part of an earlier contract
in which the speed of the mill will be increased from 70 m/s currently
to 100 m/s as soon as in April 1996.
The complete project will boost mill productivity,
improve rod tolerances and metallurgical properties, and enhance
mill utilization, according to Daniel M. Morgan, senior vice president
of sales and marketing. The first contract, scheduled for completion
in March 1997, will add a prefinishing mini-block before the No-Twist
mill for improvement of the section tolerance. The mini-block in
conjunction with the mill speedup will raise production 20%, from
250,000 to 300,000 tons a year.
In the second contract, scheduled for completion
in March 1998, Morgan will install a second strand to the mill,
an addition that will more than double current production to 600,000
tons a year. The new strand will feature the prefinishing mini-block,
No-Twist mill, water boxes, pinch rolls, laying head, Stelmor cooling
conveyor and reform station. The mill will be able to produce 5.5
mm rod with an improved tolerance of +/- 0.12 mm.
P.T. Krakatau, which produces wire rod of plain
carbon steel, first installed Morgan equipment in 1990. The Morgan
mini-block technology provides mills with the ability to produce
rod at the high speeds necessary to be competitive today.
Morgan Construction Company, is a designer and
